Región y sociedad [online]. 2023, vol.35, e1834.  Epub 01-Mar-2024. ISSN 2448-4849.  https://doi.org/10.22198/rys2023/35/1834.

Objective: To analyze women's empowerment and food sustainability in two community gardens in Mérida, located in the Las Américas subdivision, and in one garden in Dzityá which was carried out by women between 2018 and 2021. Methodology: The study is qualitative and consisted of participant observation and semi-structured interviews. Results: Personal empowerment and formal knowledge about agroecological production are the main strengths of the orchards in the Las Américas subdivision. In Dzityá, the garden was subject to the approval of the men of the Maya community. Value: This research provides useful information to the women's spatial empowerment concerning food sustainability study. Limitations: Due to the orchards’ floating population, it was not possible to interview all the people who participated in the projects. Conclusions: Personal empowerment was the basis of collective empowerment in both initiatives.
