Resumen

SALGADO VIVEROS, Cecilia. The Labor Decline: Work and Old Age in the Berry Crops of Sur de Jalisco. Región y sociedad [online]. 2023, vol.35, e1765.  Epub 04-Dic-2023. ISSN 2448-4849.  https://doi.org/10.22198/rys2023/35/1765.

Objective: Analyzing the insertion and labor condition of men and women aged 45 and over as agricultural farmworkers in the berry export crop in the south of Jalisco, and to find out if such insertion reduces or increases their degree of vulnerability. Methodology: Based on a mixed methodology and using statistical and ethnographic information sources, the analysis focuses on the way labor conditions in this crop attract a heterogeneous profile of farmworkers, including workers aged 45 and over. Results: Even though the working conditions are better than in other jobs, the vulnerability of workers aged 45 and over is not reduced. Value: the ethnographic and statistical approach to the labor conditions of an age group with very few studies. Limitations: the information on migrant day laborers was collected in company camps. Conclusions: both men and women come from agricultural and non-agricultural activities. In the case of women, it is also observed that their employment history is related to their domestic and reproductive cycle.
