PELAEZ HERREROS, Óscar y ESPINOSA GODINEZ, Jorge Iván. The Poverty of Newcomers to Baja California. Región y sociedad [online]. 2021, vol.33, e1479. Epub 22-Mar-2022. ISSN 2448-4849. https://doi.org/10.22198/rys2021/33/1479.
Objective: to demonstrate that the population arrived to Baja California in recent years is poorer than residents established for a longer time, and to investigate the causes and characteristics of this phenomenon. Methodology: National Council for the Evaluation of Social Development Policy’s biennial data for the period 2010-2018 is used. Proportion contrasts, estimation of pooled data and fixed effects regression models were made. Results: contrary of what happens in the rest of Mexican states it was found that in Baja California the proportion of poor people is higher among newcomers than in previous residents. The percentage of poor people, the relative number of immigrants, and their origin are some of the explanatory factors of these differences. Limitations: data comes from surveys not necessarily designed for the purposes of this research. In addition, it was not possible to detect all causes for the analyzed phenomenon. Value: for the first time quantification of the relationship between poverty and immigrants arriving to Baja California is made, which provides information about the causes and characteristics of it. Conclusions: Baja California is the only state in the country in which newcomers systematically contribute to raise poverty rates.
