Resumen

SANTIAGO VERA, Teresita et al. System of Peasant Resilience: The Milpa. A Study of Two Peasant Organizations in Chiapas. Región y sociedad [online]. 2021, vol.33, e1432.  Epub 20-Sep-2021. ISSN 2448-4849.  https://doi.org/10.22198/rys2021/33/1432.

Objective: To learn about peasant resilience to external shocks and the role played by the milpas of member families of coffee cooperatives in two regions of Chiapas, Mexico. Methodology: Qualitative study with content analysis scope through visits and interviews with member families divided into three categories in terms of the practice of milpa: 1) those who abandoned it to dedicate themselves exclusively to coffee cultivation; 2) those who never abandoned it, and 3) those who abandoned it but then took it up again some time later. Results: 47 interviews in which resilience was interpreted in terms of Chayanovian balances, relative autonomy, and other elements. Value: Chayanovian balances contribute to the discussion of resilience. Conclusions: the peasant resilience system is shaped by a mechanism of interrelated balances aimed at adjusting the degrees of peasantness to maintain the social reproduction of the family unit under changing conditions.
