Abstract

LOPEZ RAMOS, Martha M.  and  FRIAS, Sonia M.. Resisting Intimate Partner Violence Dynamics in Zacatecas. Región y sociedad [online]. 2020, vol.32, e1250.  Epub Aug 07, 2020. ISSN 2448-4849.  https://doi.org/10.22198/rys2020/32/1250.

This study examines the prevalence of intimate partner violence (IPV) resistance strategies and help-seeking behaviors among Zacatecas’ females. It uses a mixed-methods strategy based on the 2016 National Survey on Household Dynamics and narrative interviews with IPV female victims, in which qualitative data complements and explains quantitative results Analyses reveal that 7.3% of females experienced IPV during the previous year (5.7% situational violence, 1.4% intimate terrorism and 0.2% violent resistance). IPV female victims display a diverse array of resistance strategies (active, passive, individual, collective, formal and informal). Resistance strategies are contingent upon the violent dynamic and women’s position on the violence circle. Formal help-seeking is less prevalent among those women who experienced abuse in their families of origin. Only 9% of IPV female victims sought formal help, and 6.3% pressed criminal charges. Those women involved in intimate terrorism and violent resistance dynamics, potentially lethal for victims, are more likely to seek formal help than those women in situational violence. Results have the potentiality to inform prevention and assistance public policies.
