Abstract

MORENO MENA, José Ascensión  and  NINO CONTRERAS, Lya. Una mirada hacia las organizaciones civiles de apoyo al migrante en Baja California y Sonora. Región y sociedad [online]. 2013, vol.25, n.57, pp.61-96. ISSN 2448-4849.

Migrants in transit, those attempting to cross the border and those who are sent back from the United States, who are prey to all kinds of authorities and to organized crime, generate an important demand for services which are not adequately provided by the government sector. In view of this situation, organized civil society in Baja California and Sonora has had to provide assistance in an attempt to diminish the conditions of precariousness and vulnerability of the migrant population, including advocating for human rights and fostering formal and informal networks. Baja California, due to its long history in dealing with transitory migrants, is better prepared in terms of non-government organizations' equipment, material and human infrastructure. The data presented are the outcome of a survey applied to 21 of the 23 civil society organizations that assist migrants in Baja California and 9 of the 11 in Sonora.

Keywords : migration; civil organizations; advocacy; human rights; services; Baja California and Sonora.
