CAICEDO RIASCOS, Maritza. La inserción ocupacional de latinoamericanos en Nueva York y Los Ángeles. Norteamérica [online]. 2011, vol.6, n.2, pp.177-215. ISSN 2448-7228.
This article analyzes the distribution of Latin American immigrants in the job markets in the New York and Los Angeles metropolitan areas. Using data from the 2007 American Community Survey, the author looks at differences among workers according to place of origin, sex, and metropolitan area. She notes that in both metropolitan areas, Latin Americans hold more skilled jobs than immigrants as a whole nationwide, but at a significantly lower rate than native, non-Hispanic white workers. She also observes large numbers of immigrants with higher educations in low-profile jobs. She concludes that the schooling, English-proficiency levels, and length of residency in the United States weigh importantly in determining immigrants' occupational position, but that this varies according to place of origin and the metropolitan area where they reside.
