Abstract

RAJCHENBERG S., Enrique  and  HEAU-LAMBERT, Catherine. Wilderness vs. Desert? Representations of Mexico's North. Norteamérica [online]. 2009, vol.4, n.2, pp.15-36. ISSN 2448-7228.

From the early nineteenth century on, Americans and Mexicans made journeys through northern Mexico more and more frequently. With different aims, the travelers wrote reports, diaries, travel logs and other documents, giving us a glimpse of how they perceived that immense expanse, largely unknown territory. This article aims to relay the cultural baggage the travelers of both nationalities brought with them from their places of origin and then compare the documents they wrote about a single territory that they saw through different eyes.

Keywords : Mexico's North; nineteenth century; territorial representations; U.S. expansionism; Puritanism; border.
