Abstract

GIRALDO-CANAS, Diego. A new species of Agave (Asparagaceae: Agavoideae) from Colombia. Rev. Mex. Biodiv. [online]. 2020, vol.91, e913274.  Epub Dec 22, 2020. ISSN 2007-8706.  https://doi.org/10.22201/ib.20078706e.2020.91.3274.

As a result of recent studies of South American Asparagaceae, a new species of Agave is described. This species is endemic of a small area of the Andean Cordillera Oriental of Colombia and it belongs to Agave subgenus Agave. The new species is morphologically related to Agave congesta Gentry (an endemic species from Chiapas, Mexico), but clearly differs from it in various vegetative and reproductive characteristics, which are given. Nine use categories and 7 popular names are documented for the new species. Based on UICN criteria, the new species is categorized as “Endangered Species” (EN). Thus, a total of 8 species of Agave are currently known in Colombia: 3 are native, 4 are endemic and 1 is naturalized.

Keywords : Agavaceae; Xerophilous areas; Endangered plant species; Flora of Colombia; Neotropical flora.
