Abstract

MONTALVO-FERNANDEZ, Grecia et al. Assessment of the extinction risk of Zamia prasina in the Yucatán Peninsula Biotic Province. Rev. Mex. Biodiv. [online]. 2020, vol.91, e913012.  Epub Dec 22, 2020. ISSN 2007-8706.  https://doi.org/10.22201/ib.20078706e.2020.91.3012.

Zamia prasina is a cycad distributed in the Yucatán Peninsula Biotic Province. It was categorized as Special Protection (Pr) according to the Mexican NOM-059 of 2010. Also, it was categorized as Critically Endangered (CR) according to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) standards. However, considering the high number of natural populations recently found, as well as its presence in perturbed sites, the objective of this study was to perform a re-assessment of the risk of extinction of Z. prasina using the IUCN criteria and the Method of Evaluation of the Risk of Extinction of Wild Species in Mexico (MER) to redefine or confirm its conservation status. According to the MER criteria, the Special Protection (Pr) category is supported; however, according to the IUCN criteria, Z. prasina must be included in a lower risk category, such as Least Concern (LC).
