Abstract

The mountain wetlands currently present in San Cristóbal de Las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico, are located over 2,000 m asl. Their extension has been reduced notably due to urbanization, pollution, mining and agricultural activities. A list of macrophyte species recorded in 4 mountain wetlands is presented. Sampling was systematic and ad libitum. Species were classified as hydrophytes or terrestrial and also their conservation status (IUCN and NOM-059), level of endemicity and if they had been reported for Chiapas and if they had expanded their distribution area. We identified 55 families of vascular plants with 151 species, 63 species are hydrophytes, 30 are classified as least concern, and none is listed in the NOM-059. Five species are endemic to Mexico and 1 to Chiapas. Five are new records for Chiapas: Hydrocotyle ranunculoides, Egeria densa, Spergularia mexicana, Wolffia columbiana, Muhlenbergia subaristata. Four exotic aquatic species were associated with contaminated waters: Eichhornia crassipes, Hydrocotyle verticillata, H. ranunculoides, and E. densa. The distribution area of Cyperus articulatus and Phragmites karka was extended. There were not detected 56 aquatic monocots recorded historically for Chiapas above 2,000 m asl, which possibly could indicate a process of local extinction.
