Mexico is a country with high floristic richness of Magnoliophyta, perhaps only surpassed by Brazil and Colombia. The goal of this paper is to present revised data about the numbers of orders, families, genera, and species of Magnoliophyta, taking into account the recently proposed classification of APG III (2009). This update indicates the presence in Mexico of 53 orders, 247 families, 2 685 genera, and 21 841 species; 11 001 species are endemic. The herbaceous growth form is the most common among the species, followed by shrubs and trees; the least common are the epiphytic, climbing and parasitic species. The greatest richness occurs in the temperate forests.The xerophytic scrubland possesses the second highest set of species, followed by humid mountain forest, tropical seasonally dry forests and lastly humid tropical forest. The 5 states with the greatest floristic diversity are Oaxaca, Chiapas, Veracruz, Jalisco, and Guerrero.
