The selective S-oxidation of albendazole, fenbendazole, and other benzimidazole sulfides with sodium periodate in acid medium, afforded the corresponding sulfoxides or sulfones. In contrast, triclabendazole and other 2-methylthiobenzimidazole derivatives could not be S-oxidized under the same smooth conditions with this reagent, but with MCPBA, a stronger oxidizing agent.
