The Medici family had an important function in the political activity of Florence in Machiavelli's times and even in his life. This paper analyzes the way in which this family governed the city and the way in which this government affected Machiavelli's political thought. Special attention is paid to the way in which this family corrupted the republican life in Florence, even to a point of transform it in a principality. Based on this fact, Machiavelli determined the pressing necessity to establish clearly the form of government of the State.
