STEFFEN RIEDEMANN, María Cristina. Credit and ejidatarios producing seasonal maize and sorghum at Valle de Santiago, Guanajuato. Polis [online]. 2013, vol.9, n.1, pp.139-167. ISSN 2594-0686.

Maria Cristina Steffen Riedemann The Mexican food industry, subject to the guidelines imposed by the international financial organizations, is facing a deterioration expressed in food dependency, abandonment of farmland, the fall of the income of producers and increasing migration. The ejidatarios are the small grain producers, and the most affected by the imposition of free market model. This study aims to evaluate government policies designed to support the production of seasonal grain-growing ejidatarios. To this end we analyze a credit program offered to small producers called officially, of medium and high marginality, to assess its effects on the survival rate of the social sector. Specifically, we examine the case of ejidatarios producing seasonal maize and sorghum in the township of Valle de Santiago, Guanajuato, who have worked in recent years with the credit program called Support for Acquisition of Agricultural Inputs.
