CARRILLO-HUERTA, Mario Miguel y GOMEZ BRETON, Enrique. Technology in the sustainable use of water for irrigation in Mexico. The case of the aquifer of Tecamachalco, Puebla, 2017. Panor. econ. (Ciudad de México) [online]. 2020, vol.15, n.30, pp.27-56. Epub 12-Nov-2020. ISSN 1870-2171. https://doi.org/10.29201/pe-ipn.v15i30.250.
By 2012, around 170 of the 653 aquifers existing in Mexico were being overexploited, and five of those had been declared on the verge of extinction, thus jeopardizing the sustainability of their regions’ development. This paper reports the results of a field study, realized in 2016-2017 among 121 agricultural producers of the area of influence of the Tecamachalco Aquifer, which is one of the five ones facing possible extinction, with the objective of ascertaining the extent to which market forces, public policies and the users’ practices contribute (or not) to the sustainability of the Aquifer. It is shown that the users and the government contribute more to that effect as the former use irrigation water-saving technologies, included as part of the assistance packages offered through the public administration’s water policies of Mexico.
