The interest of the present study is to analyze the emergence of political hate speech directed at poor immigrants, during the presidencies of Mauricio Macri (Argentina, 2015-19) and Lenin Moreno (Ecuador, 2017-21). The importance of comparing these two countries lies in the fact that both governments have, discursively, flown the flags of unity and harmony. How-ever, in some specific circumstances, they have also encouraged/fostered the stigmatization of poor foreign nationals residing in both countries, providing a basis for the construction and circulation of hate speech. Far from a perilous question, this is a political operation aiming to push, to the political margins, the “other”, in an effort to underscore the idea of a “full/fulfilled community, free of conflict”. Moreover, the circulation of hate speech intensifies in contexts marked by economic crisis and the growing loss of rights, as is currently happening in Argentina and Ecuador.
