REYES CAMPOS, José Agustín e LICEAGA ESCALERA, Carlos Juan. Calcifying cystic odontogenic tumor (Calcifying odontogenic cyst). Clinical and pathological report of two cases. Rev. Odont. Mex [online]. 2009, vol.13, n.2, pp.109-114. ISSN 1870-199X. https://doi.org/10.22201/fo.1870199xp.2009.13.2.15609.
The calcifying cystic odontogenic tumor, known as calcifying od-ontogenic cyst, is one of the less frequent odontogenic tumors of the jaws and it presents several clinical and microscopical features as well as a diverse biological behavior. Since Gorlin et al in 1962 described this lesion, a controversy and misunderstanding have been generated in relation with its nomenclature and classification, and this situation originated different proposals for its classification and name. Until recent years, most of the researchers considered that the calcifying odontogenic cyst had two basic forms: a cystic and a neoplastic one; however the World Health Organization in 2003 according to the investigations and previous classifications established the term "Calcifying Cyst Odontogenic Tumor" for the cystic form and "Ghost Cells Dentinogenic Tumor" for the neoplasic or solid variant. Two cases of calcifying cystic odontogenic tumor (CCOT), and a review on its clinical, radiographical and microscopical main features are presented.
