Abstract

MARTINEZ OJEDA, Pedro Antonio  and  MIRANDA VILLASANA, José Ernesto. Bilateral osteogenic distraction of the mandible: Case report. Rev. Odont. Mex [online]. 2008, vol.12, n.1, pp.34-39. ISSN 1870-199X.  https://doi.org/10.22201/fo.1870199xp.2008.12.1.15703.

Numerous causes origin a deficient mandibular development (TMJ ankylosis, craniofacial microsomia, Pierre Robin sequence, Treacher Collins syndrome, etc.) and others that are not known. Mandibular hypoplasia is a conceptually easy condition but it can be difficult to treat. Osteogenic distraction of the mandible has gained popularity as the technique indicated for the treatment of patients with mandibular hypoplasia. This is because the morbidity of a donor site is eliminated and the complexity of the surgical procedure is less than in the rest of the alternatives. Nevertheless osteogenic distraction is not a procedure that should be taken lightly as it needs careful planning. We present a case of mandibular ramus hypoplasia in a 6- year-old male patient, reporting the clinical and radiographical data, treatment plan, surgical technique using an internal distractor and his evolution.

Keywords : Osteogenic distraction; hypoplasia; mandibular ramus.
