This article investigates the influence of Mexican postrevolutionary nationalism as well as of regional discourses on performative traditions as presented by one of the most famous Mexican dance and music ensembles: the Ballet Folklórico de México founded by Amalia Hernández in the 1950s. This contribution aims to demonstrate the interrelation (as well as the conflict and interference) between national and regional discourses as reflected onstage and their respective competitive frameworks. Seen from a etnocultural, aesthetic and performative angle and supported by interviews and case studies, the investigation focuses on the region of Sonora in the Ballet’s repertory, especifically the Danza del venado (deer dance) and a regional repertory denominated “Sonora bronco”. By analyzing differences and adaptations in corporal disposition, clothing and style, the article emphasizes the continuous negotiation between a homogenizing national discourse and the various regional identity discourses mainly questioning it.
