Abstract

OLIVEIRA, Luiz Sérgio de. Stray bullet on the border of crystal: Legacy, hesitations and contradictions of inSITE. Culturales [online]. 2017, vol.5, n.2, pp.1-37. ISSN 2448-539X.

This article investigates some aspects of the international exhibition inSITE, which between 1992 and 2005 was dedicated to the spreading of art projects in the public spaces of the border San Diego-Tijuana. Initially formed by art institutions in the region, inSITE gradually moved towards its institutional emancipation, fully consolidated with inSITE97. Ten years after the last edition of inSITE (2005), the present article analyzes the process of construction of the exhibition in the light of new art practices in the public sphere, highlighting the contributions, hesitations, ambiguities and contradictions to the context of the border. Articulated in the field of art history, with contributions from the social and political sciences, the article concludes that inSITE is part of an identity-building project for San Diego, designed by its elites, which attempts to maintain the city detached from a political perception of the border.
