Abstract

CASTELLANO GIL, José M.  and  ALCIVAR GALARZA, Claudia E.. Social perception of culture in the canton Machala, Ecuador. Culturales [online]. 2015, vol.3, n.2, pp.113-149. ISSN 2448-539X.

This article is a first partial advancement of a research project in progress that is aimed at making a diagnosis on the current cultural situation of Machala, canton that belongs to the Ecuadorian province of El Oro. The central purpose of this investigation is to check through an exploratory-qualitative questionnaire the perception that certain segments of the machaleña society have concerning their cultural reality. Therefore, it is not intended to measure or propose any methodological model, but rather to stimulate reflection and discussion on different ways to analyze the cultural reality under a social approach, that can give way to interpretative lines with the incorporation of new social indicators that take into account both the actions and their impacts as well as the citizens' perception on local cultural status and whose information can contribute to the adoption of strategies to overcome the identified limitations.

Keywords : cultural perception; cultural consumption; cultural indicators; Machala.
