This article offers to explore some aspects regarding four theoretical visions which have been relatively defined and cultivated for the research of love in social science: social-structural, social- historic, cultural and social criticism. These visions have influenced in different aspects the ways to study love and have established principles for understanding this subjective experience considering its social, cultural and power determinations. Throughout the text I outline the main postulates for such visions, detailing methodological aspects and fundamental findings in each of them, considering the most prominent authors in this field of knowledge. Finally, as conclusions, I present a balance concerning the contributions of these perspectives and the challenges facing love research in social science.
