Abstract

SANCHEZ MENCHERO, Mauricio. Cinco cuadros al fresco: Los jardines de recreo en Madrid (1860-1890). Culturales [online]. 2009, vol.5, n.9, pp.141-168. ISSN 2448-539X.

The need for a historiographic work on leisure in modern times in Spain calls for a study of amusement parks. This type of space was constructed during the 19th century not only in several European cities, but also in Madrid. Offering a place for amusement in the open with trees, within an urban setting, made family outings and recreation possible. Thus, the first architectural drafts aimed to include, together with walkways, greenery and streams, a variety of spectacles that were fashionable at the time: theater, concerts, the circus, bullfights, in addition to sporting activities and exhibitions of balloons and animals.

Keywords : history; culture; gardens; amusement; sports; animals.
