Abstract

HERNANDEZ MORALES, Kiryag Jearim et al. Production conditions of astaxanthin by Haematococcus pluvialis: Literature review 2003-2013. Rev. mex. cienc. farm [online]. 2015, vol.46, n.1, pp.7-16. ISSN 1870-0195.

During recent years, microalgae have acquired special interest, since they are important producers of compounds with high added value. Haematococcus pluvialis is the most important source of astaxanthin, which is of great commercial interest due to its powerful antioxidant activity. A literature review of 15 scientific articles was carried out, these studies evaluated different culture conditions and stress factors in order to improve the accumulation of astaxanthin in H. pluvialis. Heterogeneity was found in the studied factors as well as the proposed experimental design. The light intensity was the most important factor used in the analyzed studies. An appropriate photobioreactor design with the optimal combination of factors improves the conditions of culture and production of astaxanthin.

Keywords : Haematococcus pluvialis; astaxanthin; astaxanthin production; microalgae.
