Abstract

The text starts from an understanding of the use of direct democracy mechanisms as forms of the plebiscitary politics of contemporary populism. From there, the legal and political foundations of four citizen consultations (NAIM, Mayan Train, Trial of Former Presidents, Legalization of abortion) developed by the current Mexican government are analyzed. Its possible effects for democratic politics in Mexico are assessed.
