Abstract
ALFARO ANDONIE, Hugo Fauzi. Discrimination missing: insights on discrimination in the United States of returned guatemals. Andamios [online]. 2021, vol.18, n.45, pp.147-171. Epub Sep 27, 2021. ISSN 2594-1917. https://doi.org/10.29092/uacm.v18i45.814.
This article addresses the view of Guatemalan returnees over discrimination in the United States. A survey carried out by the International Organization for Migration (2016) showed that around 80% of Guatemalan returnees said they had not experienced any kind of discrimination. The interviews I conducted in Guatemala City in 2019 also pointed to the same results. This research seeks to help answer why discrimination is not perceived if socioeconomic inequalities between Hispanics and whites clearly show the existence of discrimination. In this article, I highlight two aspects: discrimination between Latinos, and experiences that mitigate the perception of discrimination. This work is based on the oral history methodology.
