Resumen
WENCES, Isabel y GUEMES, Cecilia. Republican democracy and confidence in Latin America: the hope that never comes, not enough. Andamios [online]. 2016, vol.13, n.30, pp.13-37. ISSN 2594-1917.
At a time of political disenchantment, can policies of open government, transparency and participation be used to combat social and institutional distrust in Latin America? To answer that, this paper reviews trust literature in order to outline the concept, demonstrate its importance to democracy and discuss ways of bringing it about. Second, it describes the most popular international initiatives to rebuild trust. Third, it tries to provide a normative framework for the implementation of measures while also addressing the challenges to our democracies by reclaiming the principles of democratic republicanism. We conclude with a word of caution towards the expectations that such projects generate.
