The work objectives are to know which were the religious spaces of the Africans and their descendants in Merida, and which their cult icon. To do this, we rely on primary and published sources, as well as research. Three spaces of religiosity and control are presented for those people, and their first devotion was to the Holy Name of Jesus and then to the Virgin of the Mountains. The black and mulatto brotherhood that existed there was open, since Spaniards also participated, and had greater control in the brotherhood and worship in the 18th century. The limitations of the work are related to the lack of data that better illustrates what has been addressed. The value of the text is to know the sites of religiosity and control for the blacks and mulattos of Mérida. It is concluded that these spaces represent the power applied from above towards that population, and although it was not violent, it did have the desired success.
