VENEGAS DE LA TORRE, Águeda y RODRIGUEZ HERNANDEZ, Josalath. Between the irrational and the defense of honor. The crimes of passion during the porfiriato. Revista Col. San Luis [online]. 2020, vol.10, n.21, 00012. Epub 14-Mar-2022. ISSN 2007-8846. https://doi.org/10.21696/rcsl102120201160.
During the Porfiriato (1876-1911) a new type of crime appeared in the Mexican press: the passionate crime, which soon after its chronicles monopolized the pages. These crimes turned out to be a challenge to the positivist crime discourse that the State propagated because it showed that not only the popular classes participated, but also the members of the elite. This article recovers crimes of passion from the press with the aim of analyzing two variables: 1) crimes committed by the popular classes where it was highlighted that they committed them as part of their ignorance, the abuse of alcoholic beverages, the ways of relating lovingly and the humble condition of the participants, and, 2) crimes committed by the elite, which were justified by the defense of honor and the care of good customs, for which they were related from romanticism.
