Juan Carlos Onetti is a universal author, but twenty years after his death he is still considered as a writer for tormented readers. This paper shows how this and other prejudices are wrong. To answer the common and false places on Onetti, this paper explores various hypotheses about his greatness and highlights the human roots of his fictions.
