LEON BOLOGNA, Eduardo. Changes and Continuities in Immigration to Argentina from Neighboring Countries. Migr. Inter [online]. 2010, vol.5, n.3, pp.175-209. ISSN 2594-0279.

Developed countries' growing restrictions on immigration invite us to examine migration between "southern countries." Compared to south-north flows, these migrations usually involve shorter distances and poorer populations. The flows also have a long history and target certain locales in the region. In the Southern Cone, Argentina has historically been the destination for migrants from Paraguay, Bolivia, and Chile. Beginning in the 1950s, when overseas immigration ceased almost completely, the flows from neighboring countries took on great significance. This article examines these flows into Argentina, considering changes brought about by the combined effects of external factors and a cumulative process over time, which together determine if the flows will continue or come to an end.

Palavras-chave : immigration from neighboring countries; cross-border flows; short-distance migration; Southern Cone; south-south flows.
