Abstract

PEREZ-AKAKI, Pablo  and  ALVAREZ COLIN, Pedro L.. Intermediación financiera y remesas en México. Migr. Inter [online]. 2005, vol.3, n.1, pp.111-140. ISSN 2594-0279.

This work analyzes the role of formal financial intermediaries in transferring family remittances from the United States to Mexico. Since the 1990s, the volume of remittances has increased surprisingly, fostering a restructuring of the mechanisms of financial intermediation. Whereas a decade ago non-bank intermediaries dominated this market, today banks have managed to win a major share of the market. However, these banking services offer limited coverage, which generates additional costs that are transferred to the remittance recipients themselves.

Keywords : international migration; remittances; banks; Mexico; United States.
