During the past 20 years, Spain has experienced a marked increase in immigration, particularly, by the Maghreb Muslims. Since the end of Franco's regime, in cities such as Granada, one can also see a tendency to convert to Islam on the part of the autochthonous population. Both phenomena are accompanied by Islamophobic attitudes, which especially affect Muslim women. This ethnographic study explores the daily life of those women in the context of a society that continues being Catholic, but finds itself in the process of secularization. The forms of discrimination as well as the rules of social exclusion for both the dominant non-Muslim society and the Muslim communities themselves are analyzed through the discourses of the Muslim women and their intercultural and inter-religious experiences. Finally, these discriminatory experiences are compared to the activities developed by non-governmental organizations and public institutions in Spain.
