MARTINEZ PIZARRO, Jorge. Panorama regional de las remesas durante los años noventa y sus impactos macrosociales en América Latina. Migr. Inter [online]. 2003, vol.2, n.2, pp.40-76. ISSN 2594-0279.

After a decade of intense growth in remittances, the relative importance of which is undeniable in several countries, the possible macro-social impacts of remittances are evaluated at the national level in Latin American countries. Brief reference is made to the remittance phenomenon theory, and the regional concerns about it are summarized: assessment of its volume, transfer costs, and possibilities for generating productive externalities in the areas receiving these resources. Additionally, attention is given to hometown associations that collectively send remittances. Next, its macro-social impacts are examined, contrasted with available empirical information on poverty, income distribution, and social expenditures in the selected countries. When speaking of "migration, remittances, and development," it is appropriate to examine scientifically their connections to well-being rather than merely taking an optimistic view based on the increase in remittances and the absolute and relative importance that they have attained.

Palavras-chave : international migration; remittances; economic development; poverty; Latin America.
