VIDAL FERNANDEZ, Laura; TUNON PABLOS, Esperanza; ROJAS WIESNER, Martha  e  AYUS REYES, Ramfis. De Paraíso a Carolina del Norte: Redes de apoyo y percepciones de la migración a Estados Unidos de mujeres tabasqueñas despulpadoras de jaiba. Migr. Inter [online]. 2002, vol.1, n.2, pp.29-63. ISSN 2594-0279.

This article examines the migratory and work experience of a group of Tabascan migrant women, who work-seasonally and legally-in North Carolina crab processing factories for seven months of the year. The article uses both qualitative and quantitative methods (survey, interviews, participant observation, and document review) to describe and analyze the negotiation strategies and support networks that the women use within their domestic groups in order to migrate, and the costs and benefits of their experience as international migrants. In this process, social networks are fundamental obtaining employment and meeting the daily needs of the family that remains behind in Tabasco. Nevertheless, these networks do not facilitate the integration of these women into the United States. Seasonal migration provides them with income while it broadens their view of the world and of their own abilities and potential. This creates the conditions for them to develop some autonomy and to lean toward a relative alteration in the rules of gender power within the family.
