Resumen

MARTINEZ VEIGA, Ubaldo. Organización del trabajo y racismo: El Ejido (España) en el año 2000. Migr. Inter [online]. 2001, vol.1, n.1, pp.35-64. ISSN 2594-0279.

This article attempts to explain racist events that occurred during 2000 in El Ejido (Almería, Spain) by analyzing the economic structure of the region, which is organized as an industrial district that relies heavily on the continuous rotation of workers among different productive units. This rotation leads to vulnerability and degradation of the labor force instead of to the re-skilling of workers. Capitalist ideology considers labor to be redundant and unnecessary. Spatial separation between immigrants and natives as well as the lack of immigrants' rights reinforces this process. The constitution of a flexible labor force makes possible an easy and continuous substitution of workers and the disappearance of specialized skills. From this point of view, racism and xenophobia seem to form part of the class organization of this capitalist society.
