In this article is analyzed the first stay of the Dominican Pedro Hernríquez Ureña (1884-1946) in Cuba after he left Dominican Republic and his passage through New York. The research is focus on the academical training that supports his literary calling. The main sources are personal documents and the publications he made on the island, that include poetry and essays, this last genre in which he expressed his perception about literature, history and politics, not only in Cuba, also Hispanic America, object of his future jobs in several countries around the continent. It is also shown the process of the publication of his first book, Ensayos críticos (Critical essays), such as the reception it had among Latin American writers.
