Abstract

ARENAS DELEON, Nicolás. A “Serial” Archive: The Revista del Río de la Plata and the Preservation of American Memory (1871-1877). Latinoamérica [online]. 2022, n.75, pp.123-154.  Epub Nov 22, 2022. ISSN 2448-6914.  https://doi.org/10.22201/cialc.24486914e.2022.75.57499.

This article examines the characteristics of the production and circulation process of the Revista del Río de la Plata, a magazine published in Buenos Aires by the intellectuals Juan María Gutiérrez, Vicente Fidel López and Andrés Lamas. Through the analysis of the printed matter and the correspondence exchanged between the people in charge, seeks to determine its place within the Argentinean publicity space during the 1870s and to demonstrate how it acted in the editorial field as an effective platform for preserving (bringing together and making visible) the continent’s documentary archives —in tension and dialogue with other private and state projects— and as a collecting and bibliophile space around which an extensive transnational collaborative network was formed that facilitated the creation and rewriting of different historical-literary narratives about Argentina’s and America’s past by the intellectual elites.

Keywords : Cultural magazines; Intellectual networks; Argentina; Nineteenth century.
