The version of the war between the Incas and the Chancas of the Andean chronicler Joan de Santa Cruz Pachacuti Yamqui Salcamaygua has been traditionally considered as an historical source. This article aims to analyze his historical recount in the light of symbolic elements -some of them as peculiar as musical instruments- that rather than contextualize the event as a real episode, show it as a foundational myth.
