JASSO MARTINEZ, Ivy Jacaranda y MARTINEZ DE LA ROSA, Alejandro. Catholic vindication of a dance: Approaches for interpreting the Tlahualiles of Sahuayo, Michoacan. LiminaR [online]. 2022, vol.20, n.2, e906. Epub 30-Oct-2022. ISSN 2007-8900. https://doi.org/10.29043/liminar.v20i2.906.
The objective of this article is to present a general reflection regarding the dance of the Tlahualiles performed in Sahuayo (Michoacan, Mexico) and to propose an interpretation of its meaning taking into account its current dynamics. We present two visions (an interpretation of historical documentary material and a description of the dance by its participants) to show the internal dynamics and possible tensions between its origins and its current state. The tension between Catholic religiosity and popular religiosity appears to be present in the performance of this dance. We registered a recent process of “consecration” to eliminate “pagan” elements that had prevailed. Our methodology consisted of analyzing historical documentary material and a qualitative approach involving techniques that included interviews, informal talks, and the observation of the dance at different venues.
