Resumen

MONTERRUBIO, Carlos; SOSA-FERREIRA, Ana Pricila  y  OSORIO-GARCIA, Maribel. Local Perceptions of the Impacts of Second-Home Tourism: A Qualitative Approach based on Social-Exchange Theory. LiminaR [online]. 2018, vol.16, n.1, pp.103-118. ISSN 2007-8900.  https://doi.org/10.29043/liminar.v16i1.567.

Framed by social-exchange theory, this study aimed to identify the impacts of second-home tourism in Puerto Morelos, Mexico. Based on in-depth interviews with permanent residents, we found that second-home tourism at the destination is associated with employment opportunities, the multiplier effect, cultural promotion, preservation of the natural environment, and altruistic initiatives. The increase in real-estate values and entrepreneurial competition are considered to be costs of the phenomenon. We conclude that, in order to define their stance on second-home tourism, locals consider both individual and community costs and benefits in their analysis of the impacts of this development.
