HENDERSON, Thomas Paul. The Restructuring of Coffee and Cacao Sectors in Mexico and Ecuador. Agribusiness Control of Peasant Land and Labour. LiminaR [online]. 2017, vol.15, n.1, pp.128-141. ISSN 2007-8900. https://doi.org/10.2536/liminar.v15i1.499.
The objective of this paper is to examine the contemporary peasant autonomous struggles, and provide an analysis of the dynamics of emerging relations between transnational export companies and direct producers. It is based on fieldwork carried out with coffee growers in the southeast of Mexico and cacao growers on Ecuador’s coastal plain. Direct relations between export companies and producers are set to impact the latter’s economic autonomy in diverse and contradictory ways as control of production and peasant labor is increasingly transferred from the direct producer to capital.
