ZEBADUA CARBONELL, Juan Pablo; LOPEZ MOYA, Martín de la Cruz y ASCENCIO CEDILLO, Efraín. Youth, Identity and Acculturation. An Analytical Approach to Indigenous Rock in Chiapas. LiminaR [online]. 2017, vol.15, n.1, pp.29-41. ISSN 2007-8900. https://doi.org/10.2536/liminar.v15i1.492.
This article examines the production of indigenous rock music in the Highlands of Chiapas as a reflection of processes of identity change among indigenous youth. As such, it attempts to show that these processes are not the simple adopting (passive) of non-indigenous cultural forms, either national or international, found currently in their surroundings or in accessible media, but rather that these processes are creative, constructive, and indicative of intercultural (and intergenerational) change which celebrate their own cultural roots, and attempt to define a position in the local or global context in these times of radical social change. The music of these groups, in public and virtual spaces, has been catalyzing, in opposition or in complement. Explore themes of the sacred vs. the profane, of occidental vs. indigenous, and analyze conflicts and similarities between modern and traditional.
