This article intends to offer, through the analysis of the history of the assessment of the tribute in Chiapas (15601817), a basic knowledge on the number of tributaries as a way to approach the evolution of the population. The article reveals the changing definition of the tributary, the way in which the tribute was assessed and the way in which tributaries were counted in order to make a methodological proposal on historical studies of the population.
