Abstract

CASO BARRERA, Laura. ¿Unión y libertad? El intento de unión de El Petén a Yucatán en 1823. LiminaR [online]. 2011, vol.9, n.2, pp.149-164. ISSN 2007-8900.

Through the analysis of various documentary sources, our aim is to study how the district of Peten, under the political administration of the Audiencia de Guatemala, attempted in 1823 to be part of the province of Yucatan. We analyze both the original discourse and the arguments used by the Petenero elite to try to be part of Yucatan, as well as the radically transformed discourse, consequence of the beginning of the Maya rebellion known as Caste War. The emergence of the indigenous rebellion led the Petenero elite to put an end to the idea of being part of Yucatan.

Keywords : Independence; southern frontier; relationships Mexico-Guatemala; Caste War.
