This article analyzes the conceptualization around a Fourier series by a group of students by means of their mathematical representations. The study was based in the theory of conceptual fields by Vergnaud, under the argument that students can solve problems in situations that have meaning for them.

To identify the knowledge of the students, their operational invariants were analyzed when the solved problems in this situation.

The idntification of invariants is important, because they can help the researcher to analyze the transit between conceptualization and the conceptual-ization of a notion, when it goes from informal to formal knowledge.
