This examination of Mexican costumbrista writing focusses on three distinc examples from Inclan, Delgado, and altamirano. In many respects, costumbrismo was a literary mode in Spanish America stimulated by the post-Imperial crisis. Prieto provides a characteristic ilustration. It encompassed a range of disciplines, including art (Velasco and Arrieta, for instance). In the aftermath of the triumph of the Liberal Reform in Mexico in 1867, it acquired a more self-consciously nationalist character. Even so, costumbrismo had always been concerned with collective identity, as seen through its popular imagery, emphasizing American daily experience. European influences were not absent, particularly from Spanish costumbristas anf French Romantics. The Mexican novel developed slowly during the nineteenth century, reaching a climax with the work of Delgado, who combined realims with the costumbrista attention to landscape and ordinary people.
