BAEZ-VILLASENOR, María Estela. From the promise of reconstruction to the little rock crisis. Sig. his [online]. 2009, vol.11, n.21, pp.138-168. ISSN 1665-4420.

The Paper has the purpose to examine the process faced by the African-americans from the end of the Civil War to one of the most significant moments in their struggle for integration to the American society. This way, the paper analyzes the achievements of the Constitutional amendments approved during Reconstruction and the Souths reaction to them. During the decades following their defeat in the civil war, the southern states established a growing number of laws intending racial segregation. Facing this situation, Afro-americans were forced to look for options. Some decided to migrate to other regions, others created organisms able to demand the protection of members of their community from the legal framework. The success they achieved in the Little Rock crisis, in which segregation was officially repealed is a consequence of this process.

Palavras-chave : Segregation; integration; African American; liberal doctrine; Constitution.
