This paper, study in depth, through colonial documentation conserved in the Archivo General de Indias, the mechanisms that were used by the merchants of the noticeable Caribbean port of Cartagena de Indias to evade royal treasury in the first decades of the 17th century. This activity was repeated in all the colonial ports of the region.
